More or less conscious

Are Alzheimer patients less conscious than healthy individuals? This would be true if we were to assume Chalmer's suggestion, that functional organization determines higher levels of consciousness, was correct. Just a thought...

  1. That's actually a pretty curious thought. I usually like to think about 'conscious' or 'not conscious', so all animals (people included of course) get lumped into the same grouping. That's definitely an over simplification though, because I'm sure the thoughts that my fish are having are not on the same level as my dog (or myself), for instance.

People are usually really touchy when it comes to saying that some people are fundamentally less sophisticated or intelligent (or conscious) than others... but something like Alzheimer's certainly does take away from the total possible functional organization of a brain.

    It's an interesting thought.
